The Wombats are coming

by Ben Davis on 27 April, 2007 | 0 comments

The Wombats have made a name for themselves as the most exciting up and coming band in Britain. Hailing from Liverpool their tunes are a master-class in how to write perfect indie-pop songs. Having previously been known as the biggest unsigned band on the planet (with daily myspace plays regularly nearing the 1000 mark) they finally recently signed to 14th Floor Records.

In February 2007 The Wombats made history by headlining a show at Liverpool’s 1200-capacity Carling Academy main room, a first for an unsigned group. This gig came after their sell-out performance at Liverpool’s Academy 2 venue – where one hundred people were turned away on the night.

The Wombats recently returned from storming the SXSW Festival in Texas. They have also played at a well known festival in Japan in front of 15,000 people. The Wombats are now embarking on their first full UK headline tour. With tracks like ‘Moving to New York’ and ‘Backfire at the Disco’ their first appearance in Wrexham is certain to be something a bit special.

The list of names cueing up to sing The Wombats’ praises is immense:

“More tunes than a pharmacist’s counter!” – NME
Zane Lowe – Hottest Record in the World – Radio 1
Colin Murray Single of the Week – Radio 1
Zane Lowe Fresh Meat Winners October 2006 – Radio 1
Claire Sturgess Single of the Week – XFM
“A silver Greyhound bus lost amongst the roundabouts of a unloved English new town” (The Fly, UK)

The Guardian said of their appearance at Beijing’s Midi Festival: “For one glorious half-hour concert at least – bigger than the Rolling Stones.”

Joining The Wombats at Central Station on May 11th will be goFASTER, also from Liverpool. April will see goFASTER release a single through uber-cool label ‘This is Fake DIY Records’. They describe their music as “Trailer-trash-Trisha-pop” and with tracks like the brilliant ‘She Starts Monday’ it is hard to argue with them. goFASTER are another band to catch live now before they are selling out much larger venues.

Opening the night will be Wrexham local lads Leaving Isaacs Shop.

They recently headlined the recent wrexhammusic.co.uk 1st Birthday Party at Central Station and received a rapturous reception. They have recently supported “The Automatic”, “The Feeling”, “Milburn” and “The Subways” and have established themselves as one of Wrexham’s top live bands.

Tickets are selling fast for this show which promises to be one of the highlights of many a Wrexham gig-goer’s year!

The Wombats are appearing at Central Station, Wrexham for a show on Friday 11th May. Support comes from goFASTER and Leaving Isaacs Shop, followed by Indie Rock n Roll club night.
