Boom Monk Ben is renowned for selecting the best of underground hip hop, drum & bass, house, electronica and the rest, as well as displaying a passion for the older groove through boxes of the heaviest New Orleans funk to the rawest Kingston dance-hall, taking in the best jazz, soul, disco and his favourite dance floor nuggets from through the years.
‘One of the best DJs I’ve ever heard…’ BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac
A prominent figure in Glasgow’s close knit clubbing scene, Ben can be found cutting, spinning and fumbling his way through boxes of beats at the city’s best clubs, bars and radio stations. The Art School and Sub Club are also smashed to pieces by the Boom Monk on regular occasions with his diverse mix of dance floor bangers, acapella blends and 3 deck mixing.
2006 saw Ben catch the attention of clubs nationwide and further with guest appearances at Divan Du Monde in Paris, Scratch in Gothenburg, Bounce in Derry, Massive Attack’s Tube Bar and Leisure at E Shed in Bristol and Edinburgh’s famous Trouble night at Cabaret Voltaire. The mighty Ninja Tune have been impressed enough to approach Ben to provide a series of ‘Boom Monk Zen’ mixes for their world famous Solid Steel radio show, which is broadcast in 30 countries world wide. The first 3 were met with universal support with Ben beating off competition from Mr Scruff, Kid Koala, Cut Chemist, James Holden, DJ Format, Hexstatic and many, many more to finish runner up in the Best Of 2006′ Solid Steel guest mix competition (beaten only by legend Steinski – who used Ableton!)
2007 will see Boom Monk Ben take up monthly residencies at Plan B in Brixton and The Reading Rooms in Dundee as well as trips to Barcelona, Leeds, Wales, Belfast and beyond already entered in his ever busy DJ schedule. You can also check out Boom Monk beats on your wireless when Kiss FM broadast an exclusive DJ mix for Joe 90’s Future Boogie show later this year. As always, you can check his fidgety fingers on the regular by tuning into www.ninjatune.net/solidsteel.
Here’s what the other showbiz set have to say…
‘A talented selector, well worth checking out’ DJ Yoda
‘You can question the name but you can’t doubt the DJ. Brilliant stuff.’ Ninja Tune
