In post-Britpop Britain few people were making an impact in the music world as much as Richard Fearless and his dark dance rock band Death in Vegas. Their debut album ‘Dead Elvis’ pushed boundaries when it was released in 1997 and their second outing, ‘The Contino Sessions’ featuring the top 10 hit ‘Aisha’, placed them firmly into the spotlight gaining them widespread critical acclaim.
In 2002 they released their third album ‘Scorpio Rising’, the title track of which gained them yet another top 20 hit and featured Liam Gallagher on guest vocals. Since that release Death in Vegas have drifted off the radar of the music loving public, with a ‘Best Of…’ compilation being their only release in the last 5 years. But now in 2008 Richard Fearless returns with his new project Black Acid and the attention is starting to turn back in his direction.
As you can probably guess the darkness remains in the music that it is made but this new band take on a more garage rock style pulling in influences from the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Stooges and XTRMNTR-era Primal Scream as well as some similarities to the old Death in Vegas sound. The band also features Oliver Ackermann who is a member of much talked about New York outfit A Place to Bury Strangers, they’ve therefore been able to gain themselves some serious attention on both sides of the Atlantic and have gained a strong fanbase even at this early stage.
Towards the end of August Black Acid will be touring the UK as well as taking in appearances at the Reading and Leeds festival’s. On Wednesday the 27th of August, Black Acid will be performing in Central Station thanks to the guys at Don’t Die Just Yet! Support comes from London shoe-gazers The Big Pink and Wrexham’s answer to Aphex Twin, Wondercut.
