Be a ‘Band for a Day’ at Llangollen Fringe Festival

Local musicians of all ages are being encouraged to perform at this year’s Llangollen Fringe festival as part of an event that invites them to join a ‘Band for a Day’.
Musician and teacher Gemma McHale is leading a team of professional mentors to support each band. She exudes enthusiasm for the project and is actively encouraging a wide age and ability range to take part in the day. She says:
“Many thousands of people in the UK enjoy playing musical instruments or singing and would love to play with others but don’t get the opportunity. Their skills and enthusiasm are never recognised by an audience because of the lack of opportunity to play in a band. Joining with other people to make music together leads to a genuine sense of achievement, and I want to encourage people to have this experience!”
The bands will be formed early on Sunday 18th July and they will work with their own professional mentor throughout the day, preparing a number of songs for the evening concert. Advice on how to give a memorable performance will be given, as well as support in technical matters. The “Band for a Day” concert on the Fringe main stage at Llangollen Town Hall will be the climax of the day, where supporters, friends and relatives are invited to enjoy the performance.
Provided that you are 11+ and you have something to offer then you are welcome.
“If you play an instrument but are a little rusty, or if you just fancy playing with others to make music, then come along and join us. A wide range of musical styles will be available, from rock to folk, classical to reggae, and will depend on those who participate.”
The Band For A Day experience costs just £35 for the whole day (£30 for under 18s and pensioners) and includes a free ‘Band For A Day’ T-shirt. Application forms are available from the Llangollen Fringe website (below) and from the main enquiry phone line (see below also).
Llangollen Fringe is being held in various venues around Llangollen from 16th – 24th July. Author and broadcaster Will Self, Alabama 3 Acoustic and Unplugged and punk poet John Cooper Clarke are some of the names on this year’s wide ranging programme of events.

Great idea! If they’re after any volunteers to help, I’d be up for it!
