Athlete to play Wrexham in July
Chart-hugging London band Athlete will be visiting Wrexham’s Central Station on July 3rd as part of their huge UK tour which kicks off in June.
The tour will kick off at the Crewe M Club on June 5 and wrap up at London’s Somerset House on July 17.
Athlete are an English indie-rock rock band. Friends since the age of fourteen, Athlete have wide ranging influences that include Grandaddy and Flaming Lips.
They started jamming and practicing in the basement of The Bear, a pub which was converted into a church and sandwich bar, on Deptford High Street in 1999. They began recording here before sending demos out. Signing with Regal Recordings, they released their first single in February ‘02.
The band came to prominence in 2003 when their debut album – Vehicles and Animals – produced popular singles ‘You Got The Style’, ‘El Salvador’, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Westside’ (previously named ‘Rockscene’ on the Athlete EP), which each ranked low in the UK top 40 charts, except ‘You Got The Style’, which reissued in 2003 at #42 in the UK charts. Their second album, Tourist (2005), reached Number One in the UK Album Charts in its first week, producing the #4 single ‘Wires’ in the charts.
In mid-June 2007, the band announced the creation of their third studio album, ‘Beyond The Neighbourhood‘. It reached #5 in the UK Album Charts after its release on September 3rd 2007. The single, ‘Hurricane’ was been released from that album and reached #31 in the charts in its first week.
The band are set to announce details of their fourth album soon.
Tickets for the show are available from Friday 24th April at Yales Cafe Bar or online at www.seetickets.com.

Not my cup of tea but will definetly appeal to a fair few locals.
