DJs Christian McBride (Fat City/B-Music/45 Midgets), Carl Rylatt (Fuzz DJs/Forecast Promotions) & Funkmode Residents
Over the last decade Christian McBride has unearthed obscure folk, funk & psychedelic rarities which will have you wondering how these tracks have not become popular hits. Christian has been releasing, digging for and dealing in rare records for many years and he consistently delivers tracks which are as good as they are rare. From the uplifting blue eyed soulful funk of Jimmy Gray Hall via the beat-laden 60’s Folk of Don Cooper, to the heart wrenching Country meets Soul of Gary Atkinson and the Madlib sampled Nino Nardini. These are fantastic collections of tracks that would never be heard by the masses if it wasn’t for Fat City’s 45 King. Check out Chris’ 45 Kings Compilations for Fat City below….Vol. I thru III and more!
As well as compiling albums for Fat City, Christian also supplies his funky goodness for Finders Keepers & B-Music in form of Compiler and DJ respectively.
His compilations for Finders Keepers vary from Psych-Folk, Funk & Psychedelic Soul. Check out B-Music’s record label, Finders Keepers, below. If left-of-centre experimental music is your thing (particularly Folk and Psych) you will not be disappointed!! The label is currently getting props from the likes of 808 State, Egon of Stones Throw Records, Carl Craig, Can, Erol Alkan, Jazzman Gerald, Gruf Rhys & DJ Format.
The B-Music website provides further information on Christian and the collective themselves. For those uninitiated the B-Music collective is based in Manchester and features, amongst others, Andy Votel, Dom Thomas, Gruf Rhys (SFA), David Holmes, Graeme Massey (808 State), DJ Cherrystones, Chris Geddes (Belle & Sebastian) and Bob Stanley (St Etienne).
It is an independent gathering of DJs, Musicians and Music Lovers dedicated to the obsessive and painstaking pursual of obscure, obsolete, exquisitely obnoxious, unbelievable, underexposed and undeniably delectable discs of experimental pop music from the psyched-out sixties and seventies. B-Music provides a pocket library for discerning aficionados of fascinating rhythms from six times around the globe – unifying record collectors, beat diggers, fanatics of the avant-garde and trash-merchants alike. Based in Manchester and hosted by Andy Votel (Twisted Nerve) and Dominic Thomas – and along with twin record labels Finders Keepers and Delay 68, B-Music represents a passionate, un-blinkered approach to the culmination of way-out sounds encompassing all elements of off-kilter counter-culture: Psych, Prog, Space-Rock, Ye-Ye, Euro-Beat, Folk, Funk, Jazz and Whacked-out Movie-Muzak, as well as cherry pickings of bugged-out Art, Cinema, Design and Literature in token doses.
Christian is also a permanent fixture at Clubs around the UK such as Electric Mud, B-Music, Friends and Family (Manchester & London), Blow up (Manchester), The Hi-Fi Club (Leeds) and various spots in Liverpool.
